The B-Side Effect is a music and conversation program built around a simple idea: some of the best things we hear, discover and talk about still come from other people.  Musically, the show lives across eclectic beats, rhymes and grooves - moving freely through hip-hop, underground and independent rhymes, R&B, soul, new jack swing, overlooked album cuts, familiar favorites, rediscoveries and sounds that don't necessarily fit neatly into one category.

 

A record doesn't have to be new, trending or widely known to belong here.  If it has something to say, creates a feeling, brings back a memory or simply deserves another listen, there's a lane for it.

That idea of different lanes is central to the program.  We all arrive at music, and life - from different directions.  Our tastes, experiences, generations and perspectives aren't always going to be the same, and they don't need to be.  The B-Side Effect is interested in where those lanes cross; the song someone else introduces you to, the story that changes how you hear a record, or the everyday conversation that reminds us how much we actually have in common.

And the conversation isn't limited to music.  Everyday life is part of the show, too.  The things we're experiencing, thinking about, laughing about, remembering or trying to make sense of can be just as worthy of discussion as what's spinning on the turntable. Listeners are encouraged to contribute their own songs, requests, subject matter and perspectives of their own. The goal isn't to speak at an audience, but to create something with a community.

At its heart, The B-Side Effect believes in human curation and genuine discovery.  Music has always traveled from person to person: a friend handing you a record, a DJ taking a chance on an unfamiliar track, somebody making a recommendation, or a conversation sending you home determined to hear something for yourself. Algorithms can predict what we might like.  People can surprise us.

 

That's also why you won't find The B-Side Effect maintaining a presence across every major social media platform.  That's intentional.

Modern social media can make it remarkably easy to reach one another, but it can also turn creativity and conversation into a pursuit of followers, engagement, trends and constant visibility.  The B-Side Effect isn't interested in chasing an algorithm simply to remain in front of one.  We'd rather put that energy into the program itself and create a place where participation has more meaning than a like, view or follower count.

Threads is the exception...a simple place to maintain a social connection, share what's happening with the show and continue some of the conversation outside of the program.  Beyond that, this website and the show itself are intended to be the home base.  No need to follow us everywhere.

 

Just find your lane, bring something to the conversation, and see where the music takes us.
